Sad AI Photo Prompts: 10 Tested Crying Prompts (2026)

A sad AI photo prompt that starts from your own selfie needs four parts: a line that locks your face, the tears spelled out (how many, where, how red the eyes are), the reason you are crying written as a place and a light, and the things to leave out. Skip the first one and the model is free to redraw you as someone else. Below are 10 sad AI photo prompts we ran on ordinary phone selfies on October 6, 2026, printed in full and ready to copy and paste, with before-and-after pictures for the four written for this article.

The shape (four parts): "keep my exact face" + the tears in detail + a place and a light + "no text, no logos". Sad boy: bus stop in the rain, black-and-white close-up, train-platform goodbye. Sad girl: rainy window at night, phone light in bed, window seat with no tears at all. Love and heartbreak: a sad couple's airport goodbye. Funny and Instagram: the sobbing meme, tears of joy, the tearful bride. Where to run them: any image editor that takes a photo plus a prompt; on Veida's AI crying filter page six of them are one-tap templates, and the free engine tab runs without an account.

The four parts of a sad AI photo prompt

Most sad AI photo prompt lists online are written for text-to-image, where the model invents a sad stranger. The cry face posts on TikTok this month upload a selfie instead, so the prompt has to say what stays, not only what changes.

Here is one sad AI photo prompt from this list, taken apart:

Part What it says Why it is there
Face lock "Keep this person's exact face, facial features, freckles, skin tone and hair unchanged." Put it first. It tells the editor which parts are yours, and naming details that tend to drift (freckles, glasses, a beard) keeps them.
Tears "watery eyes with a single tear sliding toward the pillow, wet lashes" "Sad" or "crying" alone gives the model too much freedom. Say how many tears, where they run, and what the eyes look like.
Reason, as place and light "lying on her side in bed in a dark room, face lit only by the cold glow of a phone screen" Name a light on the face (a phone screen, a window); in our runs it decided whether the tears showed. "Sad vibe" gives the model nothing to build.
Leave out "no text, no visible screen content, no logos" Stops invented captions, readable phone screens and brand marks.

You do not need a sad selfie to start. Every "before" picture in this article is a smiling or neutral phone shot; the prompt changes the expression and keeps the features. The copy-and-paste versions below all follow these four parts, so you can swap any one of them and keep the rest.

10 sad AI photo prompts, tested

Every sad AI photo prompt in the table was run on a made-up person's phone selfie with GPT Image 2, checked on October 6, 2026. Six are the built-in templates on Veida's AI crying filter page; the other four were written and run for this article.

Sad AI photo prompts for boys

Two of the three sad boy prompts, rows 2 and 3, are templates on the tool page, where their before and after pictures live. Their exact text:

2. Black-and-white close-up. Turn this photo into a black-and-white crying portrait: the same person, keeping their exact face, facial features, skin tone and hair unchanged, an extreme close-up of the face with a single tear sliding from one eye, glistening wet lashes, jaw set as if holding back emotion, hard side light from a window with deep shadows on the other half of the face, classic black-and-white film photograph with visible grain, high contrast, no text, no logos.

3. Train-platform goodbye. Turn this photo into a goodbye scene from a film: the same person, keeping their exact face, facial features, skin tone and hair unchanged, standing on a train platform at night in a dark wool coat, eyes wet and red-rimmed with tears on both cheeks, looking back over the shoulder toward a departing train, light rain, sodium platform lights and the blurred lit windows of the train behind, cinematic anamorphic look, shallow depth of field, no text, no readable signage, no logos.

Row 1: a sad boy at a bus stop in the rain

Row 1, the third sad boy prompt, was written for this list and run on a dorm-room selfie:

Before: a fictional young man with wavy dark hair and silver glasses, grinning in a grey sweatshirt in a dorm room selfie

After: the same young man in a dark hooded jacket at a bus stop at night in heavy rain, wet glasses, staring at the road with red and blue city lights in the puddles

Keep this person's exact face, facial features, glasses, skin tone and hair unchanged. Turn the photo into a sad cinematic portrait: the same young man sitting alone at a bus stop at night in heavy rain, hood of a dark jacket half up, wet glasses, red-rimmed eyes and one tear running down his cheek, staring at the wet road, blurred red and blue city lights reflected in puddles, cool blue colour grade, 50mm lens, shallow depth of field, realistic skin texture, no text, no readable signage, no logos.

It kept the glasses, the wavy hair and the shape of the face, and the grin became a blank, sad stare. Look for the tear, though: in our run it is barely there. One tear in a dark, rainy scene with the light behind him has nothing to catch, and the rain on the glass reads as wet more than crying. If you want the tear to show, put a light on his face (a passing bus, a shop window) or ask for "tears on both cheeks".

For a sad boy love version, combine this with row 7: same face lock, and name who he is crying over in the scene, then paste it into the AI crying filter prompt box.

Sad AI photo prompts for girls

Row 4 is the tool page's rainy window template, the sad girl prompt closest to the cry face posts:

4. Rainy window at night. Turn this photo into a cinematic crying portrait: the same person, keeping their exact face, facial features, skin tone and hair unchanged, in a tight close-up beside a rain-streaked window at night, watery red-rimmed eyes, a few realistic tears running down one cheek, wet lower lashes, a quiet heartbroken gaze just past the camera, warm lamp light on one side of the face and cool blue city lights blurred through the glass, shallow depth of field, film still from a romantic drama, ultra realistic skin texture, no text, no logos.

Row 5: a sad girl in phone light

Both new sad girl prompts, rows 5 and 6, were run on the same kitchen selfie:

Before: a fictional young woman with short curly red hair and freckles, smiling widely in a mustard cardigan in a bright kitchen

After: the same young woman lying in bed in a dark room, her face lit by a phone screen, one tear on her cheek and wet lashes

Keep this person's exact face, facial features, freckles, skin tone and hair unchanged. Turn the photo into a sad late-night portrait: the same young woman lying on her side in bed in a dark room, face lit only by the cold glow of a phone screen held just out of frame, watery eyes with a single tear sliding toward the pillow, wet lashes, a quiet heartbroken expression, grainy low-light photo look, realistic skin texture, no text, no visible screen content, no logos.

This is the opposite of row 1: the only light in the room hits her face from the front, so the single tear catches it and reads clearly. Same "one tear" instruction, very different result, and the light is the reason.

Row 6: sad without tears

Row 6 is a sad AI photo prompt with no crying at all:

After: the same young woman on a window seat hugging her knees in an oversized grey sweater, looking out at an overcast sky, no tears

Keep this person's exact face, facial features, freckles, skin tone and hair unchanged. Turn the photo into a melancholy portrait with no tears: the same young woman sitting on a window seat hugging her knees in an oversized grey knit sweater, looking out at an overcast sky, soft flat window light, lots of empty space around her, muted desaturated colours, calm sad expression, 4:5 vertical crop, editorial film photography, realistic skin texture, no text, no logos.

Here the posture, the empty space and the grey light carry the sad mood. It is the version for a feed post where tears would feel like too much.

Love and heartbreak: a sad couple photo prompt

A sad couple photo has two faces to keep, so the face lock has to cover both. Say "both people" in the face lock and name who does what:

Before: a fictional smiling couple cheek to cheek on a sunny sidewalk, a woman in a denim jacket and a man in a green bomber jacket

After: the same couple holding each other at an airport gate, the woman crying with her eyes closed and the man looking down at her with wet red eyes

Keep both people's exact faces, facial features, skin tones and hair unchanged. Turn the photo into a heartbreaking goodbye scene: the same couple at an airport departure gate, holding each other tightly, the woman crying with tears on her cheeks and her eyes closed, the man looking down at her with wet red eyes, both faces clearly visible, soft daylight from tall windows, blurred travellers behind, cinematic film still, shallow depth of field, realistic skin texture, no text, no readable signage, no logos.

Both faces survived the sad edit, and so did the jackets from the selfie, because nothing in the prompt asked to change them. "Both faces clearly visible" is there because a hug lets the model turn one person's face into the other's shoulder; asking for both faces makes that less likely.

Instagram and lighter takes on the sad AI photo prompt

Rows 8 to 10 are the tool page's lighter templates, for when the tears are funny or happy rather than sad:

8. Sobbing meme. Turn this photo into a dramatic sobbing meme photo: the same person, keeping their exact face, facial features, skin tone and hair recognisable, ugly-crying with the face scrunched up, mouth open in a wail, eyebrows pulled together, streams of tears pouring down both cheeks, eyes squeezed shut, bright flat on-camera flash, plain wall behind, funny over-the-top reaction photo style, sharp focus, realistic skin texture, no text, no captions, no logos.

9. Tears of joy. Turn this photo into a tears-of-joy portrait: the same person, keeping their exact face, facial features, skin tone and hair unchanged, laughing and crying at the same time with one hand pressed to their chest, glossy eyes, two bright tears on the cheeks, a wide genuine smile, warm golden afternoon light in a cosy living room softly blurred behind, candid documentary photography, 50mm lens, realistic skin texture, no text, no logos.

10. Tearful bride. Turn this photo into an emotional wedding-day portrait: the same person, keeping their exact face, facial features, skin tone and hair unchanged, as a bride in a simple ivory gown and a sheer veil, eyes shining with happy tears and one tear on the cheek, a soft trembling smile, standing in a sunlit chapel with white flowers blurred behind, gentle window backlight through the veil, wedding photographer style, 85mm lens, shallow depth of field, no text, no logos.

We also ran row 8 on the dorm-room selfie from row 1, to check that a template written on one face holds on another:

After: the young man from row 1 ugly-crying in his grey sweatshirt, face scrunched, mouth open, tears streaming behind his glasses, lit by flat flash

Same glasses, hair and sweatshirt; the expression, the tears and the flash light changed, as the prompt asked.

For Instagram, open the AI crying filter, set the aspect ratio in the generator (4:5 for the feed, 9:16 for a story) instead of only writing it in the prompt, and add any caption afterwards in the app. The sobbing meme ends in "no captions" for the same reason: let the chat supply the joke.

Why the tears look fake, and how to fix the sad AI photo prompt

When a sad edit looks wrong, check these six things in the prompt first. The second and last rows come from our own runs; the rest follow from the four parts above.

Problem Usual cause What to write instead
The face changed No face lock, or it came last Start with "Keep this person's exact face…" and name details that drift: glasses, freckles, beard
The tear does not show One tear in a dark or backlit scene Light the face from the front, or ask for "tears on both cheeks" (compare rows 1 and 5)
Tears look like glass beads Only "crying" or "tears", no detail Describe the whole face: "red-rimmed eyes, wet lashes, tear running down one cheek"
Skin looks plastic Polish words like "beautiful", "flawless" "realistic skin texture", a lens and a real light source
It looks scary, not sad Words that push toward horror Leave out "bloodshot", "black streaks", "screaming"; name a reason and a place instead
A smiling selfie still looks happy "Keep my expression" locks the smile Lock the features, not the expression: "keep my face, change my expression to sad"

That last row comes from the smallest edit we ran, the eyes-only prompt from the FAQ below, on the smiling kitchen selfie. It did exactly what it said: watery, slightly red eyes and one small tear, with the grin untouched. The result reads as happy tears, not a sad photo.

After: the young woman from rows 5 and 6 still grinning in her kitchen, eyes slightly watery and red-rimmed, one small tear on her cheek

If you want a sad AI photo, let the expression go and keep only the features.

One rule is not a prompt fix: use your own photo, or one you have permission to use. A realistic sad or crying picture of a real person can be mistaken for a real moment, so do not make one of someone who has not agreed to it.

Where to run these sad AI photo prompts, and what it costs

We ran these sad AI photo prompts with GPT Image 2, the model behind Veida's crying filter. Any editor that takes a photo plus a prompt, ChatGPT and Gemini included, accepts the same text; the results there are untested by us.

On Veida's AI crying filter page, rows 2, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 10 are one-tap templates: tap the scene, add your selfie, generate. The other four sad AI photo prompts go into the same prompt box.

How you run it on Veida Account Cost per run
Free engine tab Not needed Free, on a daily allowance
GPT Image 2 with credits Free account 50 credits at 1K, 2K or 4K
GPT Image 2 on Pro or Max Paid plan No credits

The cost shows before you run, and a failed credit run gives its credits back.

FAQ

Is there a Gemini crying prompt that keeps my face?

Each sad AI photo prompt in this list starts with the face lock, so you can paste any of them into Gemini's image editing with your selfie attached. We ran them only with GPT Image 2, so how well Gemini holds your face is untested here.

Is there a free way to make a photo cry using AI?

Yes. Veida's AI crying filter page runs its free engine tab without an account, on a daily allowance, and its six templates are rows 2, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 10 above.

What are some good sad boy photo prompts for ChatGPT?

Rows 1, 2 and 3: the rainy bus stop, the black-and-white close-up and the train-platform goodbye. All three sad boy prompts start with the face lock, so they keep your beard, glasses and hairline.

How do I add a tear to a photo?

For a sad photo, describe the tear and light the face: a light source on the face is what made the single tear visible in row 5, and the same instruction in a dark, backlit scene (row 1) barely showed. The smallest version is the ChatGPT crying eyes prompt, which you can run in Veida's ChatGPT image editor: "Keep my exact face, expression, background and lighting unchanged. Make my eyes watery and red-rimmed, with wet lower lashes and one tear on my left cheek. Realistic skin texture, no text."

How do I look sad in a picture without crying?

Change the posture and the space, not the eyes. Row 6 has her hugging her knees on a window seat under a grey sky, with empty space around her and no tears, and it is also the sad AI photo prompt built for an Instagram feed post at 4:5. For a story, set 9:16 and use row 4 or row 5.

After the sad photo, the same selfie works here too:

The four parts of a sad photo again: lock the face, describe the tears, give the reason a place and a light, and leave out text. Pick a sad AI photo prompt from the table, then open the crying filter templates and drop in your own selfie.
